The goal of Sudoku is to fill a 9x9 grid with numbers so that each row, column and 3x3 section contain all of the digits between 1 and 9. As a logic puzzle, Sudoku is an excellent brain game.

Youth of Today

This year has flown by with my being the Youth of Today LPM ! I am excited that we will be donating funds soon to NEAR Food Shelf and Prism. The agencies are extremely appreciative !

Even though I am not officially the YT LPM this year, I would like to work with Treehouse, who reaches out to our area youth. Who is interested in helping me chair a project and/or a meal for them AFTER they return to a more normal schedule?

Walk on Wednesday

May 27, 11:30 Northwoods Park I would like to re-institute Delores’ wonderful walks again this year. Let’s try the last Wednesday of the month. This month it will fall on the 27th. We may not always Walk on a Wednesday – maybe a Trot on Tuesday, a Frolic on Friday. We’ll see what happens! We will meet by the parking lot on the west side of Boone. I am open to any suggestions!

Who’s that Lady?

I invite people to submit who you think is this wonderful woman. All correct answers will be put in a drawing for a special treat! This time we are taking the Way Back Machine for this month’s famous woman... Born in Missouri in 1852, she was orphaned by 12 years of age. She dressed in men’s clothes and did whatever work was to be had. She drifted to Deadwood, South Dakota where she met up with Wild Bill Hickok and her legend began. In later years she toured with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. She was a skilled sharpshooter on horseback. It’s said that if you messed with her you were “courting Calamity”.

Home Free Collection Project

I spoke with Home Free Shelter and asked what New Hope WT could do to help. They indicated ladies especially need things to occupy their time. They are out of adult coloring books and things to keep them busy. So I propose, for members that wish to help, you put together zipper bags with colored pencils or crayons and coloring books; Sudoku books or pages and pencils; Crossword books and pencils; easy craft projects with items needed and instructions or whatever you creative ladies can come up with. She cautioned that they can’t take any markers or paints due to little ones getting their hands on them and making messes. If you have something to donate or have any questions, please contact me. I would like to drop items off the end of May, since they are in need now. Rita Johnson – zucarita@comcast.net

Take Me Out to the Garden…

By Diane W. Carr

Spring and one’s thoughts turn to the great outdoors. Gardening is a hobby, a pastime, and a passion. For me, one thing that gets me through winter is wondering what plants will pop up in the spring. It’s like how some people think about baseball… this will be the year we make it to the bigtime; we’re going all the way. Unfortunately, if my garden were a baseball team, it would be the Cubs. Minor league at that. I love my garden, but it doesn’t love me back. If there is love, the garden loves me for my money. More mulch! More compost! Plant something here in the north bed that won’t die off like the tickseed and lupine (and the coneflowers and the rose bush). Make it snappy! For years I would go to the Friends School Plant Sale (the largest plant sale in the upper Midwest) and go slightly crazy. I would go with a list, which I promptly ignored, as I fell in love with their 30 different kinds of tomatoes. Thirteen different type of marigolds! Rare flowers, common flowers, roses, bushes, trees, shrubs. Most of the plants were small and inexpensive. Most of them didn’t last the season in my yard. In truth, my garden is a hospice center where plants go to die. What doesn’t die, but instead thrives, are weeds. I have dandelions the size of dinner plates. Creeping Charlie everywhere. I spend my first days in the garden pulling weeds. They are relentless. I had a patch of purslane that took me 3 years to irradiate. Burdock and quack grass that has been with me for years. So how does my garden grow? Solomon seal is hard to kill and looks like you know what you’re doing. I probably have 10 different types of Hosta’s, with the rabbits only eating the ones I buy from Bachman’s. Hardy geranium is truly hardy. Sedum (which I call sedum and forget them) pop up all over. Bleeding hearts are wonderful flowers. Once you establish peonies, you really can’t kill them. After they bloom (right before a heavy rain which puts the blossoms in the mud) you can trim them back and have a tidy bush. Shrub roses, originally established in Canada, are a good bet. Beardtongue is hardly and reliable. I let lamium loose on the back of my house and it looks good with no fuss. Just run it over with a lawn mower if it gets out of line. I try to keep the raspberry bushes from taking over the yard. I will continue to encourage and coax my plants to prosper while flailing away at the weeds. A little sun, a little patience, and a little luck gets me through the summer. Come September, I throw my hands up and turn my back on everything. But I know it will be waiting for me next spring.

Member Feature, Tawn H: What are you doing in the 2020-2021 WT year

Hello,

My name is Tawn Hanson and I have been a member of the New Hope chapter since 2008. I joined to gain friends, and boy did I ever. As my husband is fond of saying, you never just join something to join, you always get involved. That being said, I have been true to form. I have served on our local board in every position, the district board, including DD, and now I am looking forward to the new adventure of serving on the state level. I will be serving as the Community Connection SPM. My theme this year is Giving Power to Our Communities. One of the areas that I will be promoting is Habitat for Humanity. I truly believe that this organization empowers people to rise above situations that they find their lives in.

On a personal note, I have been married to my wonderful, supportive husband, Scott, for 23 years. We have two amazing children. Our Son, Ryan, is a senior at Armstrong High School. Our daughter, Abigail, is a freshman at Armstrong High School. Ryan is an avid mountain biker and Abigail is a competitive gymnast and softball player. And yes I am actively involved in their sports teams, not just a spectator. I also work full time as a dental assistant at Metropolitan Periodontists.

As we navigate these new waters of Covid, our communities will need our support and individual expertise more than ever.

- Tawn H.

Member Feature, Jennifer A.: What are you doing in the 2020-2021 WT year

This year I am so excited to be joining the executive council of Minnesota Women of Today as the SPM for Priority Area-Wishes & More. My theme is Unlocking Wishes, which is a perfect fit, considering I work daily with students with disabilities unlocking their potential. I am an Occupational Therapist for St. Paul Public Schools. I live in Crystal with my son Cameron who is truly my pride and joy. Cameron and I enjoy being part of our community volunteering with the New Hope chapter, where I have been a member for about 10 years. I did take a brief break from New Hope and was welcomed into the Brooklyn Park chapter for a year. In both chapters I have held various board and LPM positions. My most recent position was as District 7 Director this past year. It was an amazing opportunity to represent an extraordinary group of ladies and be part of the greater group of MNWT. I look forward to my the next adventurous that are ahead.
